College Council

The College Council is the principal academic and administrative advisory body of the institution. It plays a crucial role in ensuring the effective functioning of the college by fostering academic excellence, upholding institutional discipline, and promoting participative governance.

Composition of the College Council

The College Council is constituted as per the Kannur University statutes and includes:

  • The Principal (Chairperson)
  • All Heads of Departments
  • Senior-most faculty members (as per university norms)
  • Librarian
  • IQAC Coordinator
  • College Council Secretary (elected from among the faculty)

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  1. 1. Academic Planning and Development

    • Assist the Principal in the formulation and implementation of academic policies and programmes.
    • Recommend curriculum enrichment and suggest academic innovations in tune with university guidelines.
    • Promote interdisciplinary and skill-based programmes and value-added courses.
    • Support the formulation of the Academic Master Plan – Vision 2030.

  2. 2. Examinations and Evaluation

    • Facilitate the smooth conduct of internal examinations and university assessments.
    • Ensure timely preparation and submission of internal assessment marks and records.
    • Review the academic performance of students and suggest remedial measures.

  3. 3. Admission and Student Matters

    • Advise on matters related to student admissions in compliance with university and government norms.
    • Review student progression and implement strategies for academic support and mentoring.
    • Recommend actions on issues related to student discipline, attendance, and grievances.

  4. 4. Infrastructure and Resource Development

    • Suggest academic infrastructure requirements such as classrooms, laboratories, and library resources.
    • Recommend the procurement of equipment and teaching aids to improve the learning environment.

  5. 5. Quality Assurance

    • Assist the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) in preparing the Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR) and other documentation.
    • Participate in the assessment and accreditation processes (e.g., NAAC, NIRF).
    • Promote academic audits and feedback mechanisms for continuous improvement.

  6. 6. Faculty Development and Research

    • Recommend faculty development programmes such as workshops, seminars, and FDPs.
    • Encourage faculty to undertake research projects, publish papers, and pursue higher studies.
    • Support collaborative initiatives and MoUs with institutions and industry.

  7. 7. Discipline and Code of Conduct

    • Enforce the college code of conduct for students and staff.
    • Recommend appropriate disciplinary action in case of violations, subject to University regulations.

  8. 8. Event Planning and Extracurricular Activities

    • Guide the planning and execution of co-curricular and extracurricular events.
    • Support the functioning of various clubs, NSS, and other student forums.

  9. 9. Policy Review and Institutional Governance

    • Periodically review existing policies and recommend modifications for better governance.
    • Advise the Principal on important matters affecting the institution’s academic and administrative functioning.

  10. 10. Liaison with University and Statutory Bodies

    • Ensure effective communication and compliance with Kannur University guidelines.
    • Facilitate the implementation of directives from the University, UGC, and the Government of Kerala.

Conclusion

The College Council is a cornerstone of collaborative academic governance at SIBGA Institute of Advanced Studies. It ensures the participative functioning of the college and supports the Principal in all strategic and day-to-day academic affairs, thereby contributing to the institution’s continuous progress and holistic development.
